"I shall not dispute you," I answered. Alas, I had myself perceived the likeness the minute the veil had fallen about the pinched but handsome features!
"A forewarning," whispered my wife, "a forewarning of what has this day happened under our roof. It was a wraith we saw. Wilbur, I shall not spend another night in these rooms."
And we did not. I was as anxious to leave as she was. Yet I am not a superstitious man. A classic whodunnit by Anna Katharine Green. Written in 1899.
Wilbur sees a woman dressed in a gray cloak leave his wife Lydia's room. They don't know the woman and had not let her in. So who is she? How did she get into the room? Why did she come? She can't have been a ghost, or can she?
Interesting short story and up to Green’s usual standards. In fact, I wish it had been expanded to a novel or at least a novella. A bit of a ghost story in there as well.
Who is the female walking through their apartment - real or a ghost, and why.
An okay story
