Heroine is a spunky girl being raised on an estate in Ireland. Hero, a young lawyer from Charleston SC, becomes her guardian because Papa, who died in the States, thought it was a good idea and he really liked Charleston. Heroine hates hero with the fury of a 15-year old willful girl. Hero is stuffy

I can see why this is so little read nowadays - the language and attitudes about the ex-slaves in Charleston is jarring to say the least. But this author has the knack of creating the most lovable characters - I could just eat Miss Pinckney. He also has an amazing gift of creating the sense of place
