In Baghdad during the 2011 withdrawal, an active NOC case officer working under a fragile humanitarian NGO cover realizes the threat is local: a militia with intimate knowledge of government operations is using local intelligence networks to hunt his defecting asset, Farid al-Khatib, after a public assassination cracks the citywide flow of information. Cut off from headquarters by surveillance, he has to keep the cover alive, protect Farid’s family, and move a terrified source who knows too much to be left in the open.

In The Exfiltration Pact, that means more than rescue—it means managing encrypted messengers that can be delayed and intercepted, verifying routes without a clean line to HQ, and getting Farid out before a rival faction’s seventy-two-hour elimination order turns a fabricated double-agent story into a death sentence. A mole hunt is already moving through his network, and every false leak makes the asset easier to expose, harder to trust, and more likely to be erased before he can be recovered.

His fatal flaw is the one rule he cannot break: he trusts the asset more than the institution, even when that loyalty clouds his judgment and points suspicion in the wrong direction. The cost is professional and deeply personal, because the same devotion that keeps him moving also threatens the two-year humanitarian cover that has kept him alive. In a city where one school card, one clinic receipt, and one delayed message can decide whether a family survives, the only thing more dangerous than abandoning Farid is keeping the promise not to.
