Eve's Diary

Mark Twain

Book Overview:

Eve's Diary is a comic short story by Mark Twain. It is written in the style of a diary kept by the first woman in the Judeao-Christian creation myth, Eve, and is claimed to be "translated from the original MS." The "plot" of this novel is the first-person account of Eve from her creation up to her burial by, her mate, Adam, including meeting and getting to know Adam, and exploring the world around her, Eden. The story then jumps 40 years into the future after the Fall and expulsion from Eden. It is one of a series of books Twain wrote concerning the story of Adam and Eve, including 'Extracts from Adam's Diary,' 'That Day In Eden,' 'Eve Speaks,' 'Adam's Soliloquy,' and the 'Autobiography of Eve.' Eve's Diary has a lighter tone than the others in the series, as Eve has a strong appreciation for beauty and love. (Introduction by Wikipedia)

. . .I was not timid any more, but tracked it along, several hours, about twenty yards behind, which made it nervous and unhappy. At last it was a good deal worried, and climbed a tree. I waited a good while, then gave it up and went home.

Today the same thing over. I've got it up the tree again.

SUNDAY.—It is up there yet. Resting, apparently. But that is a subterfuge: Sunday isn't the day of rest; Saturday is appointed for that. It looks to me like a creature that is more interested in resting than it anything else. It would tire me to rest so much. It tires me just to sit around and watch the tree. I do wonder what it is for; I never see it do anything.

They returned the moon last night, and I was SO happy! I think it is very honest of them. It slid down and fell off again, but I was not distressed; there is no need to worry when one has that kind of neighbo. . . Read More

The Diaries of Adam and Eve, Mark Twain

Mark Twain retells the Garden of Eden story in the first person, presenting the separate perspectives in diary form of the legendary father and mother of the human race.

In Twain's version Adam comes across as the original couch potato, grumpily uninterested at

Absolutely charming book ! It was a very quick and easy read with most pages bringing a smile.
Especially adorable were the parts after Cain was born and Adam first thinking he was a fish, then discounting that theory, thought perhaps a kangaroo, and so on !

Very cute.

Just what I needed right now, a humorous book about the world's oldest couple. Seems like men and women had trouble understanding each other from the very beginning. Go figure.

***NO SPOILERS***

No fan of Mark Twain’s work should overlook this slim masterpiece, an ingenious and highly amusing peek into the minds and lives of Adam and Eve during their first days. The narrative is organized as half Adam’s diary and half Eve’s. The tones are distinct. Adam’s is a straightforwa
