Inspirado em E.T.A. Hoffmann, autor muito admirado por Balzac, é um conto baseado na figura de don Juan, o protagonista. Aqui ele comete parricídio a fim de obter o elixir da vida eterna que está nas mãos de seu pai. Final curioso.

Je n'ai pas encore rencontré de roman de Balzac qui m'ait enthousiasmé. Ici, deux très courtes nouvelles, l'une atroce et édifiante - assez efficace - pendant la guerre de libération d'Espagne sous Napoléon. L'autre est une variation sur Don Juan versant dans l'horreur grotesque et le moralisme manq
