In Berlin in 2023, sidelined counterintelligence analyst Leonie Brandt is forced to work as an academic researcher on intelligence ethics when a public disclosure on Invalidenstraße blows open two senior officials and points straight back into her own service. In Echoes of the Past, the danger is domestic: someone inside her institution is using restricted channels, sensitive files, and monitored official devices to quietly sabotage trust from within.

Leonie’s job is procedural and urgent: trace the leak, verify the packet seams, and track down the mole before the public disclosure hardens into a security summit scandal next week. Working through a crisis archive and quarantined internal chat, she has to separate real access from planted disinformation, while a mole hunt inside her own network turns every confirmation into a test. The deeper she goes, the more the evidence points to an embedded insider who knows exactly how the service thinks.

Her fatal flaw is loyalty upward: she trusts the authority that should protect the record, and wrongly assumes the loudest suspects are the threat below. That makes her vulnerable to a mentor’s carefully managed omissions and to the cost of following her doctrine, which refuses to buy success with innocent lives. The closer she gets to the truth, the more her Dr. Lena Vogt cover becomes the thing the service can use to break her.
