As a novel, of course the story is incomplete and a little lacking in the denouement… especially as compared to peak Hawthorne…. as an insight into the thought process of the author it is priceless and I am thankful to his family for allowing publication.

This has got to be one of the most bizarre things I have ever read. From plot to setting to character to novelistic form, this book is just weird. This review will have minor spoilers, but honestly, this is not a book you should read to find out what happens at the end.
