In The Conductors, recently activated sleeper agent Milan moves through a post-Soviet city as a municipal worker with a clean slate and a damaged history, but the crisis is domestic: a rival faction backed by media narratives and local law enforcement is already using rumors to turn his cover into a liability. When an informant is seized beneath a rally banner and the service stair under the monument goes wrong, Milan sees his own institution closing around him.

With only hours before the rally becomes the faction’s public handoff point, he has to infiltrate the gathering, recover the critical documentation hidden in its service corridors, and feed the intelligence to a newly formed opposition movement without tipping his old allies. A mole hunt is already active inside his network, his personal devices are monitored, and the people steering the rally can use police pressure and the broadcast story to make him the headline before he reaches the file.

Milan’s fatal flaw is that he keeps believing civic language and local ambition can still be read honestly, so he trusts the polished politician and doubts the cautious handler trying to slow him down. Then an old colleague returns from abroad with critical data, and every move toward the truth risks exposing the municipal cover that lets him cross checkpoints, back rooms, and locked doors. The hardest cost in this espionage thriller is that the only disguise strong enough to save him is the one the city has already learned to print beside his name.
