In Broken Watch, Felix Maurer is a sleeper agent living in Berlin under a cultural consultant cover, his ties to the agency fading until a suspicious urban informant at a Neukölln tram stop triggers a sleeper-activation alarm inside his own intelligence network. In a city saturated by cross-agency surveillance and EU anxiety, the threat is not foreign — it is coming from inside the system he serves.

Felix has to work the way he was trained: follow coded public-forum messages, read movement patterns, and activate the right protocols before a dual-loyalty agent embedded in local intelligence can turn a warning into a breach. But the mole hunt is poisoned by a cunning operative inside the agency, who uses the European intelligence-sharing initiative to track movements and leans on municipal disruptions to block verification. Worse, discredited reports about Felix’s activation plan were prepared months in advance, and the next surveillance reviews could end careers if he misses the narrow window to contain the damage.

As Felix pushes deeper, his own fatal flaw becomes the trap: he clings to the exact shape of his cover identity and misreads the people closest to him when the room changes faster than his instincts. He is trained to never let personal loyalty cloud national interests, yet every answer forces him to weigh that doctrine against the people being used around him — an old handler, a compromised source, and a harbormaster with his own leverage. The real cost of the novel is brutal and specific: the more Felix protects his cultural consultant legend, the easier it becomes for the agency to use that same paper trail to rewrite him as the threat.
