Aunt Crete's Emancipation

Grace Livingston Hill

Book Overview:

Aunt Lucretia — 'Crete' to her family — is a sweet, patient older woman, who lives with her narrow-minded sister and spoilt niece, acting as their unpaid and unappreciated domestic servant. When they leave town in order to avoid the unexpected visit of a "backwoods" cousin, she is left at home to welcome him. She's willing to love him whatever he's like, and he's looking for a home having lost his mother years before, so the two are ready to become fast friends. But what does that mean for Aunt Crete's prejudiced relatives and how can their wrongs against her be remedied?

Book Excerpt:
. . .that moment that the grocery-boy arrived at the back door with a crate of red raspberries.

“Land alive!” said Miss Crete disappointedly. “I hoped those wouldn’t come till to-morrow.” She bustled about, taking the boxes out of the crate so that the boy might take it back; and before she was done the door-bell rang.

“Land alive!” said Miss Crete again as she wiped her hands on the kitchen towel and hurried to the front door, taking off her apron as she went. “I do hope he hasn’t come yet. I haven’t cleared off that breakfast-table; and, if he should happen to come out, there’s three plates standing.”

But the thought had come too late. The dining-room door was stretched wide open, and the table in full view. The front door was guarded only by the wire screen. The visitor had been able to take full notes, if he so desired.

This is a sweet Cindrella-like story that has been among my top 5-favorite GHL books since I was very young.

I highly recommend it.

One of my absolute favorite GLH books. With a similar story to A Cloudy Jewel, this book offers the best of GLH's rich writing and deeper stories. Always an encouragement.

This is the best book in the world, today.

There is no character development.
There are no twists.
There is a lot of descriptions of how to dress the stout and elderly in Edwardian fashion.

There is utter and supreme satisfaction.

It is Cinderella, but simpler, and instead of a beautiful young girl

Grace Livingston Hill’s Aunt Crete’s Emancipation reminded me of Miss Lavinia’s Call which was also written by GLH. Both stories speak of appreciating others, doing kindnesses to others verses selfishness and mockery. The contrasts of heart and character are very illuminating!

Now THIS is a Cinderella story that I can really get behind. I loved this story. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Good and bad are clear and everyone gets what they deserve. I really needed that right now, even though I have to get up in just four hours, I am glad that I stayed up to finish this
