In late-Cold War Berlin, burned former operative Marek Adler is surviving as a low-level municipal clerk when a wrong folder in the wrong tray exposes the real crisis: Elena Markova, the asset he personally protected on his last assignment, has forty-eight hours before execution. In Asset Requiem, the threat is domestic—Marek’s own counterintelligence division is driving the purge, controlling the narrative around loyalty from inside the institution and using his year-old bureaucrat cover against him.

With no agency backing and only old contacts, Marek has to locate and exfiltrate Elena by moving through dead drops, station ledgers, and one-use meetings while his safe houses vanish across the city. The forty-eight-hour execution order is the weapon, meant to force him into the open while a mole hunt makes every connected asset look compromised and every protective move politically impossible. In a city where face-to-face tradecraft is the only reliable channel, one leak can turn rescue into exposure.

Marek’s flaw is brutal and specific: guilt makes him reach for the nearest human culprit too fast, and that misread gives his handlers room to steer him. To honor the rule that he never abandons anyone who trusted him, he must keep going even if doing so burns the clerk identity that has hidden him for over a year. The cost is not just failure—it is becoming legible to the same office that signed Elena’s death sentence.
