In ancient times, sirs, when a man had committed some great sin he lashed himself with cruel stripes, but I tell you no rod, no whip of many thongs ever stung or bit so sharp and deep as remorse—it is an abiding pain. Therefore I walk these highways preaching always forgiveness and forgetfulness of self, and so needs must I walk until my days be done, or until—I find her again." The stranger rose suddenly and so stood with bent head and very still, only his hands griped and wrung each other. Yet when he looked up his brow was serene and a smile was on his lips."

Wonderful story!

As with other Jeffery Farnol books, this does not disappoint. What a truly precious little story. Great characters, a little tragedy, great friendship, a young man learning to become a man, and of course a sweet love story full of twists and turns. This was a great read.

Saved from recycling due to the publishing date, and was pleasantly surprised by a good yarn. As other reviewers have described it, this is a Regency romance told from the man's point of view. I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was serialized because there are several detours only some

I enjoyed it more when I read it as a teenager. Back then, I was less prone to notice the flaws in what I read. This time, it was too gushy and there was far too much fantastic coincidence and redundancy, which a good editor would have stripped out. Still a good story, though.

3.5 - Not as good as Heyer, but enjoyable anyway.

Farnol is pretty good at keeping the story going. And when it does drag a bit, he's nice enough in the chapter title to advise the reader they can skip this one. I've found he's usually right.
