Alice's Adventures Under Ground

Lewis Carroll

Book Overview:

This is the handwritten book that Carroll wrote for private use before being urged to develop it later into Alice in Wonderland. It was generously illustrated by Carroll and meant to entertain his family and friends. When a sick child in a hospital enjoyed it so much, the mother wrote him saying it had distracted her for a bit from her pain and led eventually to Carroll expanding the story.

"I'm sure I'm not Gertrude," she said, "for her hair goes in such long ringlets, and mine doesn't go in ringlets at all—and I'm sure I ca'n't be Florence, for I know all sorts of things, and she, oh! she knows such a very little! Besides, she's she, and I'm I, and—oh dear! how puzzling it all is! I'll try if I know all the things I used to know. Let me see: four times five is twelve, and four times six is thirteen, and four times seven is fourteen—oh dear! I shall never get to twenty at this rate! But the Multiplication Table don't signify—let's try Geography. London is the capital of France, and Rome is the capital of Yorkshire, and Paris—oh dear! dear! that's all wrong, I'm certain! I must have been changed for Florence! I'll try and say "How doth the little,"" and she crossed her hands on her[15] lap, and began, but her voice sounded hoars. . . Read More

I enjoyed Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, especially as this copy has fantastic replicas of the original drawings. Although the story is so familier, it was nice to actually read it at last. I couldn't get into the Sylvia and Bruno stories at all - I was totally lost after a coupl

I’ve known and devoured the classic books by this author. Wonderland serves as a place of great imagination, unique sensibilities, and absurd and even sometimes quite disturbing characters. I found the stories to be highly readable, very entertaining, and extremely witty. I think his stories stand u

It reminded me of my childhood — I look at it now through a different lens, being able to recognize the darkness my childhood mind could only perceive as “this is a little creepy but I like it”

Even if you’re an adult, I highly recommend letting it take you back with a second sight after

Such a wonderful collection

Enchanting!!! I literally left little pieces of my heart on each passing page.

Great classics.

4,75 stars - English hardcover - I have dyslexia -
Note in notebook : read some poems in my schoolsysteem. This book I read while I was au-pair in Bath.

Hermoso.
