. . .Now for the cherries and the children—bless us, where are the children? And the cherries? Why, the tree is as bare as a blackthorn in February! The starlings have been at it, after all. Oh dear! oh dear!"[25]

"Oh dear! oh dear!" echoed a voice from behind the tree, followed by shouts of mocking laughter. Not from the children—they sat as demure as possible, all in a ring, with their hands before them, and in the centre the huge basket of cherries, piled as full as it could possibly hold. But the Brownie had disappeared.

"You naughty brats, I'll have you punished!" cried the Gardener, furious at the laughter, for he never laughed himself. But as there was nothing wrong; the cherries being gathered—a very large crop—and the ladder found safe in its place—it was difficult to say what had been the harm done and who had done it.

The Adventures of a Brownie is sort of a proto-Nesbit; a book like this eventually evolved into Nesbit's Five Children and It which evolved into The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobewhich eventually becomes Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (with some stops and diversions along the way). These stories are wonderful for young children. They really enjoy listening to them being read aloud.

Tis is a story for people that enjoy the adventures of life small and in this case adults learn the lesson!

Fun stories. Very cute.

First published in 1908, this collection of children's stories and poems was written by the English novelist and poet Dinah Maria Craik (born Mulock and often credited as Miss Mulock or Mrs Craik). My father's book, so many years ago. I enjoyed it.

This version seems to be the closest to mine. My edition is very old, and written by "Miss Mulock", so I am assuming before her marriage. The pages and binding are quite fragile. No copyright or publisher in mine is printed.

I am reading a very old edition, undated, published by the Mershon Company. I found this copy of the book at our library's bookstore and was chuckling at the author's humor on the first page, so I had to get it.
It was a quick, pleasant read and was an interesting look at life at the turn of the p...more

Among her many memories was one of a rainy afternoon when she read the students a story about Brownies and let them draw pictures of them. Sixty-five years later she was still irritated at the parents who were angry because...more
