Adventures of Arsene Lupin, Gentleman Burglar

Maurice Leblanc

Book Overview:

A contemporary of Arthur Conan Doyle, Maurice Leblanc was the creator of the character of gentleman thief Arsène Lupin who, in France, has enjoyed a popularity as long-lasting and considerable as Sherlock Holmes in the English-speaking world. This is the delightful first of twenty volumes in the Arsène Lupin series written by Leblanc himself. In an unprecedented act of literary pastiche and cross-over, Sherlock Holmes and Lupin actually meet, briefly in this first volume, and more substantially in the next. But after legal objections from Conan Doyle, the name was changed to “Herlock Sholmes.”

With the mechanical action of an habitual smoker, he placed the cigar close to his ear and squeezed it to make it crack. Immediately he uttered a cry of surprise. The cigar had yielded under the pressure of his fingers. He examined it more closely, and quickly discovered something white between the leaves of tobacco. Delicately, with the aid of a pin, he withdrew a roll of very thin paper, scarcely larger than a toothpick. It was a letter. He unrolled it, and found these words, written in a feminine handwriting:

I am re-reading this at the moment. This is the first time Penguin issued this particular edition. Arsene Lupin is a major French literature character - where he basically steals from the Rich ... and keeps the dough. Sort of a nicer version of Fantomas.

I have a serious collection of the works -...more

The original gentleman burglar stories--first published in 1907 in French. I read the French version of book 1--the first in a long series by Maurice Leblanc. There are several short stories in each volume. It's a lot like Sherlock Holmes in that you're always trying to figure out how he did it,...more
