The Japanese, as well as the Spaniards, had long known of the existence of islands in that part of the Pacific Ocean. The Englishmen were received by the simple natives with awe and wonder, Captain Cook himself was declared by the priests to be an incarnation of Lono, god of the forest and husband of the goddess Laka, and abundant provisions were brought to the ship as an offering to this deity.
