AN UNPLEASANT PREDICAMENT

This unpleasant business occurred at the epoch when the regeneration of our beloved fatherland and the struggle of her valiant sons towards new hopes and destinies was beginning with irresistible force and with a touchingly naïve impetuosity. One winter evening in that period, between eleven and twelve o'clock, three highly respectable gentlemen were sitting in a comfortable and even luxuriously furnished room in a handsome house of two storeys on the Petersburg Side, and were engaged in a staid and edifying conversation on a very interesting subject. As soon as I finished Tsypkin's Summer in Baden-Baden, I felt the irresistible urge to (re-)read Dostoevsky. White Nights: 4/5
This was written before his prison term. It's a love story. Enjoyable but nothing special.

The Honest Thief: 3/5
It was good but nothing great either. Sometimes a little draggy.

The Christmas Tree and the Wedding: 4/5
I quite like this one. It is kind of a social satire.

The Peasant Mare

Been revisiting this particular collection since 9th grade. Dostoevsky is a master, plain and simple, who understood psychology and suffering like few others ever have. This anthology represents the very best of his shorter works, an excellent introduction to a genius we need to find again.

If one can ignore White Nights, this is a perfect book. 'A gentle creature' & 'The Honest thief' were best.
